Ricardo Delgado

Mata Ortiz &
Casas Grandes
Pot with bird, branch and geometric design

Born in 1970, Ricardo Delgado Cruz has been producing pottery since 1999. His teacher was Manuel "Manolo" Rodriguez. Ricardo's style has grown to include light carving and sgraffito in addition to his intricate painted designs that often include realistic animals and swirling bands of traditional Paquimé patterns. His more recent pieces have featured designs based in nature: birds, butterflies, plants, branches, flowers and wetland scenes.

Of the pottery making process, Ricardo says he enjoys the painting and carving most. Sandra Lorena Arras, Ricardo's wife, often helps him with sanding, polishing and filling in larger painted areas on his pots. Her styles are very similar to his although she tends to work with smaller pieces.

Ricardo first entered the Concurso de Mata Ortiz in 2000.
