Eugene Gutierrez

Santa Clara

Polished and matte black carved deer dancer figure

Eugene Gutierrez was born into Santa Clara Pueblo in 1953. Like his sisters, Effie Garcia, Julie Gutierrez, Sally Tafoya and Ethel Yazza, he learned how to make pottery watching his mother, Victoria Gutierrez, as he grew up.

Eugene sometimes makes carved and sgraffito bowls but he specializes in carved, polished and matte black Pueblo dancer figures: Buffalo, Ram, Eagle and Antelope.

Eugene was a participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market from 1983 to 1998. At times he participated in the Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and won a few ribbons there, too.
