Emma Yepa
Jemez
The daughter of Jose and Ida Yepa, Emma Yepa was born into Jemez Pueblo in May, 1968. The Yepa family has a long history as acclaimed pottery makers and includes Ida Yepa, Alvina Yepa and grandmother Reyes Toya. Emma began working with clay when she was 13, learning from her mother and grandmother.
Although she does some sgraffito work with medallions and geometrics on some of her polished redware pieces, Emma is more known for her distinctive carved melon style swirl pottery. She has been an exhibitor at the Santa Fe Indian Market, Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and the Southwest Museum Show in Los Angeles. In 2000 she earned the First Place ribbon for pottery at the Jemez Red Rocks Arts & Crafts Show. In 2001 she earned the Second Place ribbon for pottery at Red Rocks.
