Betty Jean Fragua

Jemez

The daughter of Manuel and Juanita Fragua, Betty Jean Fragua was born into the Jemez Pueblo Corn Clan in October 1962. Her mother, Juanita, taught her, her sister Glendora and their brother Clifford the traditional methods of making Jemez pottery as they were all growing up. All three excelled at the art and all became award-earning potters.

Betty Jean's style is very similar to her mother's but with a more contemporary feel to it. Glendora's style is even more contemporary while Clifford does more sculpture than pottery these days.

Betty Jean was a regular participant in the Santa Fe Indian Market, Eight Northern Pueblos Arts & Crafts Show and the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonials beginning around 1984, and earning many First, Second and Third Place ribbons over the years.

Betty Jean liked to create carved and lidded jars decorated with painted lizards, flowers, corn plants, feathers and geometrics. She usually signed her pieces with: B.J. Fragua Jemez Pueblo New Mexico. Sadly, Betty Jean passed on in October 2022.
